Driving The BMW 6 Series
For any given component of a car, there's a particular material which is ideally suited. Consequently, we use both aluminium and steel in the construction of the BMW 6 Series Coupé. Certain engine parts, the bonnet and the front-end structure including side walls are all made of aluminium. As well as reducing overall weight, this helps to ensure a virtually even distribution of weight between the front and rear axles, a major factor in the car's outstanding agility.
At the heart of BMW's Active Steering system is the planetary gear set incorporated into the steering column. The system uses an electric motor to vary the angle of turn-in, increasing or decreasing it depending on the speed. At low to medium speeds, the steering ratio is very direct, giving the car agile reactions and minimising the required steering input. At very low speeds, when manoeuvring into a narrow parking space for example, the system requires only two turns from lock to lock.
The BMW 6 Series Coupé is available with a choice of three six-speed transmissions that ensure optimum power delivery to the driven wheels. As well as six-speed manual and automatic units, it is also available with BMW's Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). The shorter gearing on the 6 Series Coupé further underlines the car's sporty character.
Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) allows you to drive at the limits without fear of exceeding them. It increases wheel slip at the driven wheels in order to ensure optimum traction on any surface. This then allows the behaviour of the BMW 6 Series to be controlled entirely by the driver, with the Dynamic Stability Control system taking a back seat. Only in critical situations and at higher speeds does DSC intervene, making changes as necessary via the engine management system. Up until that point, the driver can give their sporting ambitions free rein.
