MINI John Cooper Works Review

John Cooper was an automotive racing legend. His rear-engine chassis design would change the face of the sport at the highest level. Therefore, any car to feature his name is sure to be a serious machine!

Performance

Customisation is of the upmost importance to MINI, their cars can be specced with a whole manner of different features, from Satnav to full leather seats and a range of personalised elements! The main focus of the MINI John Cooper Works hatchback however, is the BMW derived 2.0-turbocharged engine. Offering a 10 percent increase in power and a 23-perfect increase in torque over the previous generation, you can be sure this car means business.

Design

The John Cooper Works’ suspension hasn’t been dramatically altered in comparison to the Cooper S. It retains the same MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear axle. However, the springs and dampers have been re-tuned to help improve agility, the anti-roll bars have been swapped with hollow items to save weight and all MINI John Cooper Works cars, except the Challenge, have electronically adjustable dampers as standard.

Braking is taken care of by a set of Brembo calipers and 330mm discs on the front. This set up isn’t just for looks though, the calipers nearly scrape the inside of the wheels! This does however mean you’re presented with more than adequate stopping power, even on track!

Interior

Though the interior is based on the MINI Cooper S, you’re still treated to some bespoke features in the MINI John Cooper Works! Bucket seats are trimmed in Carbon Black Dinamica fabric as standard, JCW logos can be found dotted about the cabin too. Stainless steel pedals add a further sporty feel the hot hatch. John Cooper Works cars comes with a wealth of standard kit, including DAB digital radio, air con, heated mirrors, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, a speed limiter and an auto-brake function for hill starts.

Verdict

Overall the MINI John Cooper Works is a very grown up hot hatch. It may not allow itself to give in to the more playful tendencies of its rivals, such as the Ford Fiesta ST. It is instead a grown-up alternative, one that you’d be happy to live with every day surrounded by creature comforts, content with the knowledge that you have a potent engine and capable chassis ready to attack any twisting B-road!
